THE JOYFUL MYSTERIES

OF THE MOST HOLY ROSARY

THE JOYFUL MYSTERIES

INTRODUCTORY PRAYERS

May our contemplation on the Joyful Mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary fill us with peace and joy at the coming of Emmanuel (God with us)… of Christ Our King… the son of God… the son of David… and the son of Mary; and may it dispose our hearts to receive the transformative grace of the virtues they exemplify. Amen.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our supersubstantial bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. Amen.

OREMUS: FOR THE VIRTUES OF FAITH, HOPE, AND CHARITY

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

O My Jesus, forgive us our sins. Save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy. Amen.

THE FIRST JOYFUL MYSTERY

THE ANNUNCIATION OF MARY

Then Mary said: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.” And the Angel departed from her. ~LUKE 1:38

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

RECALLING THE COMING OF CHRIST THE KING AND HIS QUEEN MOTHER… THE PROPHET LIKE MOSES AND THE RETURN OF THE ARK OF THE COVENANT

In this, the first of the mysteries of the rosary, the angel Gabriel speaks of our long awaited King, the son of David (LUKE 1:32-33) and the son of Solomon. In so doing, we may see in Mary the emergence of the New Queen Mother. For in the Davidic Kingdom, the queen was never the king’s spouse (often there were many), but always the king’s mother, as first noted when Solomon assumed the throne… and had a “throne” brought in for his Queen Mother (1 KINGS 2:19).
In this way, the Davidic kings – and most especially Christ Our King – followed the fourth commandment to “give glory to thy father and mother” (DEUTERONOMY 5:16). In the Davidic and eternal Kingdom of the Christ, this baby, Jesus, like Solomon, would some day assume His throne after the death of His father (Saint Joseph) and would grant His Virgin Mother Mary to “stand at His right arrayed in gold of Ophir” (PSALM 44:10). The Old Testament and the angel Gabriel give us a foreshadowing of the last (Glorious) mystery of the Rosary: “The Coronation of the Virgin Mary”.

“Then Mary said to the Angel, “How shall this be done, since I do not know man?” And in response, the Angel said to her: “The Holy Spirit will pass over you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. And because of this also, the Holy One who will be born of you shall be called the Son of God” (LUKE 1:34-35).
When recounting the Annunciation of Mary, Saint Luke highlights the connection between the Old Testament Ark of the Covenant and the Virgin Mary, as the New Ark. He used the same rare Greek word (ἐπισκιάσει, episkiasei, “overshadow”) to depict the action of the Holy Spirit in relation to the Ark as had also been used in the Greek Septuagint of his time: “And [Moses] raised up the atrium around the tabernacle and the altar, drawing the hanging at its entrance. After all these things were perfected, the cloud covered (episkiasei) the tabernacle of the testimony, and the glory of the Lord filled it” (EXODUS 40:31-32). At the Visitation of Mary, he will also mention additional Old Testament language associated with the Ark, foreshadowing Mary as the New Ark.

THE SECOND JOYFUL MYSTERY

THE VISITATION OF MARY

And in those days, Mary, rising up, traveled quickly into the hill country, to a city of Judah. And she entered into the house of Zechariah, and she greeted Elizabeth. ~LUKE 1:39-40

RECALLING THE ARK OF THE COVENANT & THE BLESSING OF OBED-EDOM THREE MONTHS IN THE JUDEAN HILL COUNTRY

At the Annunciation of Mary, the angel Gabriel says she will be “overshadowed” by the Holy Spirit, reminding us of the overshadowing of the Ark of the Covenant. Here, describing her visit with her cousin Elizabeth (LUKE 1:39-56), Saint Luke also mentions John’s “dancing/leaping” for joy and Mary’s “3-month” stay in the Judean Hill Country, again recalling the Old Testament Ark when King David took the Ark to the same Hill Country (2 SAMUEL 6:14-16) where it remained 3 months as a blessing the household of Obededom (2 SAMUEL 6:11).
Saint Luke’s retelling and Moses’ detailed account of the arks’ creation – its purity (gold of Ophir), its holiness, its power, its contents (the staff of Aaron, the word of the tablets, the manna) – tell us much about the purity and holiness of the Virgin Mary, the Ark of the New Covenant… and about the Christ child conceived within. This child is the New (prophet like) Moses (DEUTERONOMY 18:15-18). With a God-given authority (i.e., staff), He is the Word (i.e., tablets) made flesh and the True Manna from heaven.

THE JOYFUL MYSTERIES

CLOSING PRAYERS

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us o Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation. Grant, we beseech Thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Amen.

THE GLORIOUS MYSTERIES

Amen.
